Schedule A ConsultationWhat Is Breast Implant Revision Surgery?
Breast implant revision is a cosmetic surgery that is designed to replace an existing breast implant with a new one. Usually, it is done to further enhance the appearance of the breast but may also be used to alleviate discomfort or correct complications such as:
- A ruptured or deflated implant;
- The implant has shifted;
- Capsule contracture (painful scar tissue);
- Desire to switch the type of implant (saline or silicone) or upgrade the implant to newer technology;
- Dissatisfaction with the size or appearance of current implants;
- Desire to change implant sizes.
Who Is A Candidate?
Candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations of what the surgery can and cannot accomplish and desire to change or update their implants for cosmetic or medical reasons, which may include:
- Women who experience implant complications, such as rupture, leakage, capsular contracture (hardened scar tissue around the implant), or implant shifting;
- Women who are unhappy with the size, shape, or appearance of their breasts after a previous augmentation;
- Women who have experienced weight changes, pregnancy, or aging that have affected the appearance of their breasts.
Procedure Steps
The steps of implant revision surgery will vary depending on the reason behind the revision and whether another enhancement is being completed during the same surgery such as a breast lift. The surgery is performed at IBI Plastic Surgery’s state-of-the-art surgery center in Loganville, GA, and may include the following steps:
Anesthesia will be used to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free during the surgery. The type of anesthesia used will be based on your needs and medical history.
Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Angelina will make incisions to access your current implants. The location of these incisions will depend on the specifics of your surgery and may include an inframammary incision under the breast, a breast lift incision, or a periareolar incision around the nipple.
Dr. Angelina will then carefully remove your old implants and make corrections, if needed, to adjust the implant pocket or reduce scar tissue.
Once any necessary adjustments are made, the new implants are carefully placed to ensure the results look natural and symmetrical.
After the new implants are in place, Dr. Angelina will close the incisions using sutures and may also apply surgical tape to help provide support during the healing process. A special compression garment will be.
Benefits
Improves the appearance of the breasts through adjustments in implant size, shape, or placement, which can also enhance breast symmetry and volume.
Can provide relief from discomfort due to issues like scar tissue that forms around an implant (capsular contracture) or an implant that has shifted.
Replacing damaged or ruptured implants.
Upgrading to newer implants that may offer a more natural feel, movement, durability, or higher safety standards, etc.
Can be combined with a breast lift to reverse the undesirable changes that can occur due to weight changes, pregnancy, or aging.
Boosts self-confidence.
Recovery
After implant revision surgery, you may feel mild pain and experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness for a few days. You will need to wear a compression bra for about six weeks to help reduce swelling and keep your incisions from separating during the healing process.
Dr. Angelina will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions that outline how best to take care of your breasts, including activity restrictions to help make sure you heal properly and make your recovery as smooth as possible. Make sure to attend your follow-up appointments so your progress can be monitored to ensure your recovery is progressing as it should be.
Results
Breast implant revision surgery can enhance the look and feel of your breasts by replacing old implants with new ones. Some improvements may be noticeable right away, and it can take about six weeks for the swelling to go down so you can see the results more clearly.
Most women can see final results within six to twelve months and can last anywhere from ten to twenty years, depending on the type of implants used and how active you are.
