Kybella® is a prescription injection that helps break down and remove fat under the chin without requiring surgery. It is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that can eliminate moderate to severe submental fat below the chin. Kybella contains a patented formulation of deoxycholic acid that can effectively dissolve stubborn fat deposits. Kybella is also used “off label” for combating localized fat in other areas such as the elbow, upper arms, knees, and stomach.
Who Is A Candidate For Kybella®?
Candidates for Kybella injections should be at least 18 years old, in good health, and have concerns about the appearance of excess fat on their chin (double chin) or neck area. They should not be pregnant, nursing, recently had or are planning a surgery or cosmetic treatment on their chin, face, or neck, have nerve problems, or have a bleeding disorder.
A double chin is often associated with weight gain or getting older, but it can be a genetic trait that cannot be controlled by diet or exercise. It can make you appear older or heavier than you are and cause embarrassment and low self-esteem. If this sounds familiar, Kybella might be a safe and effective solution to eliminate this unwanted fat accumulation and restore your self-confidence.
How Does Kybella® Work?
The active ingredient in Kybella® is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps breakdown and absorb dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella® destroys the fat cells and visibly reduces the fullness under the chin that causes a double chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so your double chin should be gone forever.
Procedure Steps
During your initial consultation, which can be done in person or via telehealth, Dr. Angelina will gather your medical background and information on any prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are currently taking. Once it is determined that you are a candidate for Kybella, your treatment will be scheduled and will take anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes. The steps involved in the procedure include:
The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed, and the areas for treatment are marked.
The areas to be treated are numbed using a topical gel or cream if the patient desires.
The Kybella injection is administered into the marked areas.
The process will be repeated one to three months later until desired results are achieved. Some patients only require one treatment, but it may take between two and six to achieve the results you want.
Recovery
Every person will heal at their own pace, but it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, numbness, redness, and inflammation under your chin after a Kybella® treatment, but these side effects will normally go away in about 3 – 7 days. You need to avoid strenuous activity for at least 48 hours after your injection and sleep with your head elevated. It is important to stay hydrated to help the swelling dissipate more quickly and avoid foods that are spicy or high in sodium, alcohol, and smoking.
To help lessen the discomfort, you can use hot or cold compresses, use doctor-recommended over-the-counter pain relievers, wear a chin strap for compression, and get plenty of rest.
Results usually start to become visible around four to six weeks after your first Kybella injection for a double chin but can take between 12 weeks and six months to see the final results.
What Is The Difference Between
Liposuction And Kybella?
Both procedures can eliminate the fat deposit that forms a double chin, but they use different techniques. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires small incisions, and Kybella is an injection that is non-surgical and does not leave scarring. Liposuction removes fat instantly and only requires one session, where it will take the Kybella injection several weeks or possibly months to eliminate fat. Sometimes, liposuction requires considerable downtime, and the recovery from Kybella injections is usually just a few days
Results
The results after the Kybella injection for your double chin will appear gradually, and the timing will depend on how much fat needs to be eliminated and how many treatments are necessary. The final results after Kybella injections will show a visibly more defined transition between the jawline and the neck. When injected into the fat under the chin, Kybella® causes the fat cells to melt away, and the excess is removed from your body through your lymphatic system. Once these fat cells are eliminated, they are gone forever and will not grow back. Any fat cells that remain will continue to respond just like any other fat cells in the body that can grow or shrink. So maintaining a healthy weight is recommended to maintain optimal results.
