What is Kybella®?
Kybella® is a prescription medicine and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” According to U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2015, Kybella® is a patented formulation of pure deoxycholic acid, and FDA approves as a non-surgical injection used deoxycholic acid to the remove fat cell under the chin. Therefore, the use of treatment in other areas like fat around the elbow, upper arms, knees, and even the stomach is off the label.
Submental fullness is a gathering of excess fat beneath the chin, commonly known as “double chin.” It can be something you’ve had your whole life due to inherited traits or starts to appear as you get older or if you gain weight.
Double chin is often associated with weight gain and age. But for some people, a double chin is a genetic component. In other words, at a young age, you can have a double chin without being overweight and can cause a person to appear older or heavier than they are.
Having a double chin makes you unhappy, self-conscious, and embarrassed. You want to have desirable chin shapes without surgery and try to eat well and exercise frequently but submental fullness does not go away. However, Kybella® is the only safe and effective solution for your desired aesthetic appearance without taking any risk to danger your health.
How Does Kybella® Work? The active ingredient in Kybella® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella® destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.
What Should I Expect From The Procedure? Before receiving Kybella, tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. According to the FDA, Kybella® is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The injection process can take between 15 and 20 minutes. The process will be repeated one to three months later. Users show measurable results after 12 weeks or at least two sessions. Subsequently, maximum results can be seen after six months. After Kybella® treatment, you will experience swelling, bruising, numbness, redness, and inflammation under your chin. Usually, the swelling will go away in 3-7 days after injection. Above all, you are not allowed to do exercise and avoid alcohol, caffeine, niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, spicy foods, and cigarettes for 48 hours post-treatment.
What Is The Difference With Liposuction?Unlike liposuction, which removes fat but can leave the skin loose, there is some contraction in the skin that is observed to occur with Kybella as it gradually dissolves the treated fat. As a result, some patients also benefit from some tightening of the skin after injection of Kybella.
When Will I See Results Of Kybella®?You will see results gradually. At least 2 sessions, after being treated with Kybella®, patients reported greater improvement in self-perception than patients treated with placebo, including feeling happier and looking younger based on their chin profile. They also reported feeling less embarrassed, less self-conscious, less overweight, and less bothered by the fullness under their chin. In other words, Kybella clearly works and has been proven safe.
How Long Do Kybella® Results Last? When injected into the fat under the chin, Kybella® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After reaching your desired aesthetic, further treatment is not expected. If the fat cell has been destroyed, it won’t return. And if you get rid of all the fat cells in your double chin with Kybella injections, they disappear forever as the effect is final.
