What Is Post-Weight Loss Surgery?

When you carry a large amount of excess weight on your body, for example, as a result of obesity, your skin changes and loses elasticity. You may also develop stubborn fat deposits that are difficult to lose through diet and exercise. Cosmetic surgery can address both of these problems.

Now that you have successfully lost a massive amount of weight and are no longer considered obese, you may be encountering new issues that make you unhappy with the way your body looks. Excess skin and small pockets of fat are new challenges that can appear after losing weight.

Very often, weight loss surgery is just the beginning of a lifelong journey that includes an active lifestyle and a healthy diet. These lifestyle modifications will help maintain a healthy weight but will not correct excess skin, stubborn fat deposits, wrinkles, or other cosmetic imperfections resulting from significant weight loss.

Not all patients experience the same obesity-related cosmetic issues, but for those patients who need to address these types of imperfections, cosmetic surgery is an excellent option.

What Are The Benefits Of Cosmetic Surgery After Weight Loss?

Post-weight loss surgery is not only about improving your physical appearance; it’s an absolute necessity for some of our patients. It improves their quality of life, makes it possible to move better, wear better-fitting clothing, and improves their self-esteem.

Surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck, Thighplasty, and Brachioplasty surgery can remove excess skin and fat to reveal the contours of your body. These procedures involve liposuction to remove the fat deposits and the excision of loose skin. This is an effective and reliable way to achieve your desired look after losing weight.

What Should I Expect From Cosmetic Surgery After A Significant Weight Loss?

The appearance of the skin and the distribution of fat vary by patient, so we carefully determine the appropriate procedures that will best address the individual needs of each patient.

During your consultation, Dr. Angelina will discuss what you can expect from the procedures necessary to remove excess skin and fat. Often, a combination of both surgical and non-surgical procedures will be used for optimal results.

What Are the Most Common Surgical Procedures After Weight Loss?

Each patient has individual needs. In some cases, a patient may need an arm lift to get rid of extra skin left by a significant weight loss. Often called “bat wings,” this loose skin hangs down from the upper arm area. If the amount of loose skin is minimal, a non-surgical procedure such as BodyTite or Evolve Tite may be sufficient to address the issue.

Often, weight loss will also reduce a woman’s breast size, and if she had overly large breasts, she may experience a loss of volume that the surrounding skin could not adequately retract to accommodate. This patient may require a breast reduction with a lift or possibly implants to replace the lost volume.

Tummy tucks are very common after a pregnancy or massive weight loss. Many times, obesity or pregnancy can cause the abdominal muscles to separate and leave excess fat deposits and loose skin. Using one of many tummy tuck techniques, a cosmetic surgeon can repair the damaged muscles and remove excess skin and fat to restore a much leaner-looking midsection.

Some patients may require a back lift because they have excess skin draping on their back after losing weight. A back lift will often improve the bra line and the contours of the buttocks and may also be combined with an outer thigh lift.

Facial surgery is also popular after weight loss to remove excess skin on the cheeks and chin.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Aside from the natural progression of aging, if you continue to maintain your ideal weight by living a healthy and active lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and daily exercise, the results of your post-weight loss surgery can last for many years.

Post-weight loss surgery is not only about improving your physical appearance, it’s an absolute necessity for some of our patients. It improves their quality of life, makes it possible to move better, wear better-fitting clothing, and improve their self-esteem.
