There will be no more episodes of self-consciousness because you are unhappy with the way your breasts look. Dr. Angelina and her knowledgeable team of professionals will guide you in selecting the perfect size and shape so you can achieve the look that you are envisioning and ensure you get the results that you want.

Many women are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts. Some have felt underdeveloped from a young age, while others have experienced the loss of volume due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. The natural process of aging, fluctuations in weight, cancer, or trauma can also cause women to seek cosmetic help to improve the look of their breasts.

Breast augmentation through the use of breast implants is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the United States each year. Choosing the best breast implant surgeon will be a key factor in determining the final results of your surgery.

What Is A Breast Implant?

A breast implant is a man-made device that is surgically inserted into the breasts to enhance or add fullness. Breast implants consist of an outer layer or “shell” made from silicone and filled with different consistencies of silicone gel or a saline solution.

In the United States, silicone breast implants are the type most often used although many women opt for saline implants.

Why Would A Woman Want Breast Implant Surgery?

The benefits of breast implant surgery will vary for each patient depending on their circumstances. Women of all ages and in different stages of life may find their breasts are not the shape or size that they prefer. They may have experienced weight loss, pregnancy, or a naturally occurring imbalance in the size of their breasts (one larger than the other), or may have undergone surgery or experienced an injury to one or both breasts.

Enhancing the breasts with breast implants has a profoundly positive effect on a woman’s self-esteem and appearance. Women who are looking for a boost in confidence, a restoration of their former youthful curves, and a revival of symmetry and fullness can achieve their desires with breast implants.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Breast Implant Surgery?

Ideal candidates for breast implant surgery are individuals:

  • whose breasts have fully developed;
  • who are physically healthy;
  • who are not pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • who have realistic expectations of the surgery outcome.

How Do You Choose The Perfect Breast Implant?

Once you have chosen a board-certified cosmetic surgeon to perform your breast implant surgery, you will make a few decisions together to determine your choice of breast implants.

Several breast implant brands are FDA-approved and cosmetic surgeons may have brand preferences or may offer several options. Surgicare Arts & Aesthetics offers two preferred breast implant brands (Natrelle® and MENTOR®) chosen for their outstanding quality and variety in breast implant types and sizes.

When choosing implants, patients should consider what they want their results to look like. One of the best ways to communicate their preferences to the surgeon is by reviewing and discussing before and after pictures of breast implant results.

The surgeon will work with the patient to choose a breast implant type, size, and profile.

Breast Implant Types

Breast implants are available filled with silicone gel or a saline solution. Silicone gel implants offer different consistencies from squishy to firmer. Each adds volume and fullness and is just a matter of patient preference. See breast implant images below to see an example of saline vs silicone breast implants. Find out more about saline vs silicone breast implants.

Breast Implant Sizes

Breast implant sizes do not follow standard bra size measurements although these sizes are often used to offer a comparison. Breast implant sizes are categorized by the amount of “filling” they contain in cubic centiliters (cc). For a general comparison, 250 cc usually adds about one cup size to the patient’s current breast size.

Silicone breast implant sizes can range from about 125 ccs up to 800 cc and saline implants are custom filled by the surgeon according to the results desired by the patient.

Breast Implant Profiles

Another size consideration when choosing a breast implant is the size of the circumference (width) of the base of the implant. The width of the implant’s base will determine what is known as the implant’s profile.

The profile will determine how far the breast implant sticks out from the patient’s chest. Two implants that contain the same number of cc’s but possess different widths will offer different profiles. Profiles are usually categorized by the amount of fullness desired and include:

What Should I Expect From My Breast Implant Procedure?

Breast implant surgery is performed under general anesthesia and will take approximately an hour. The type of implant will influence the location and length of the incision although she is always diligent in strategically placing incisions to minimize scarring. Saline implants can be placed through smaller incisions because they are filled after placement.

After the implants are placed, the incisions are sutured closed and covered in surgical tape or dressings. Patients will be instructed to wear a special bra for about six weeks during their recovery. Patients are given aftercare instructions on how best to recover from their breast implant surgery which includes information regarding lifting, physical activity, movement, etc.

Breast Implant Recovery

After surgery, surgical tape and dressing will be applied to the breasts to protect them and facilitate healing. You may experience mild pain, swelling, bruising, and tenderness, most of which will be managed in the first two days with prescription pain medication. After a few days, the over-the-counter pain medication should be sufficient to manage postoperative pain. For optimal results, you should take good care of yourself and follow all postoperative restrictions and advice, including when you can return to work. You should avoid lifting things heavier than 10 lbs.

Most patients are fully recovered and can resume their normal activities in six weeks.

Side Effects Of Breast Implants?

Some associated side effects although not common include:

  • Capsular contracture;
  • Breast pain;
  • Risk of Infection;
  • Reduced nipple or breast sensation;
  • Implant shifting;
  • Implant rupture or leaks.

The surgeon will recommend routine MRI imaging or other diagnostic scans to check for leaks and ruptures.

Breast Implant Removal

Sometimes women choose to have their implants removed for medical or cosmetic reasons. If necessary, Dr. Angelina can also assist with removing breast implants in addition to revising previous surgeries that resulted in less than desirable results.

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

Breast implants are not meant to be lifetime devices and require a small amount of maintenance. After the first few years, periodic MRI scans are needed to ensure there is nothing amiss with the implants. Most implants will last around 10 years.
