Carrying extra weight, aging saggy skin, decreased muscle tone, and rapid weight loss can all affect the appearance of your knees and the surrounding area. There is not a specific technique or exercise that targets knee fat although dieting, jogging, bike riding, jumping rope, exercises like lunges or squats, and walking might help reduce fat and help tone your legs and knee area. The downside of trying one of these methods is that some of these techniques may cause joint pain in your knees and it may take quite a long time to see any results or you may not see any fat reduction at all. Knee liposuction is ideal for targeting small collections of fat that are difficult to reduce by diet and exercise alone.

What is Knee Liposuction?

Knee liposuction removes excess fat deposits from the knees using an outpatient surgical procedure. Knee liposuction is often done in tandem with thigh liposuction to achieve a beautifully proportioned and contoured look.

What Are the Benefits of Knee Liposuction?

Liposuction of the knees provides the following benefits to patients:

  • Reduces the puffy fat in the knee area;
  • More comfortable when running or walking;
  • Legs and knees appear slimmer and more symmetrical;
  • Enhanced leg shape and contour;
  • Boosts confidence to wear clothes that show the knees.

Who Is a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for knee liposuction if you normally maintain a consistent healthy weight within 30% of your ideal body weight and have good skin elasticity but have been unable to eliminate fatty deposits in your legs, knees, and thighs. Liposuction is not recommended for people who smoke or have any serious chronic illnesses.

What Should I Expect from the Procedure?

Knee liposuction can be performed under local or general anesthesia so you will not feel pain during the procedure. The surgeon will insert a small tube called a cannula through tiny incisions made around the inner knee which will loosen and suction out the excess fat.

After the surgery, and the incisions are closed up, the surgeon will cover the area with compression bandages which are designed to control excessive bleeding and swelling during your recovery. It is normal for edema or swelling to occur after knee liposuction so the patient will wear compression stockings for at least 6 weeks. These special garments not only help keep swelling down, but they also help shape and contour the liposuctioned area.

You will need to take it easy for a few weeks and refrain from exercising or resuming your usual activities until cleared by the doctor. Full recovery is traditionally 3-4 weeks.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The results of knee liposuction are considered permanent as long as your current weight and fitness level are maintained, more than one session may be necessary to achieve your contouring goals.
