Schedule A ConsultationWhat Is Clitorial Hood Reduction?
The clitoral hood is the skin that is located just above the opening of the vagina, and its function is to protect the delicate clitoris and its surroundings. These folds of skin normally leave only a small portion of the clitoris exposed, but when this skin is excessive or too long and covers up the majority of the clitoris, it can cause issues. A surgical procedure can be completed to eliminate some of the excess skin and tissue and correct these issues.
Who Is A Candidate?
Clitoral hood surgery is also called a hood reduction and is a procedure some women choose if they feel like the skin covering their clitoris is too thick or hangs too low. It can help women who feel discomfort during exercise, sex, or even when they are wearing certain clothing. Some women just desire a smoother or more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Candidates for clitoral hood surgery should be in good health and have realistic expectations of the results and recovery.
Procedure Steps
Dr. Angelina will begin by marking the area to use as a guide where the excess tissue will be trimmed. You will be given local anesthesia to numb the area and sometimes light sedation if needed so you feel relaxed and comfortable during the procedure.
Once the area is completely numb, she will carefully remove the extra folds of skin around the clitoris to reduce the hood without affecting the clitoris itself or its sensitivity.
After removing the extra tissue, Dr. Angelina will shape the area to make it look smooth and symmetrical, ensuring the results look natural and are well-balanced with the rest of the labia.
The incisions are carefully closed with tiny dissolvable stitches that do not need to be removed later. Dr. Angelina takes particular care with their placement to help the skin heal neatly and leave behind very minimal scarring.
You will be moved to a recovery area where you can rest for a short time and then be discharged the same day. You will be given detailed instructions on how to keep the area clean and how to avoid irritation or exerting pressure on this area during the healing process.
A clitoral hood reduction is often done together with a labiaplasty for the best results, which involves the elimination of excess skin from the labia minora (the smaller lips outside the vagina) to enhance the way they look, eliminate irritation, and create better proportions.
Benefits
Provides a permanent solution to pain and/or embarrassment resulting from genital concerns.
Can heighten sexual satisfaction with enhanced clitoral sensitivity.
Can help with achieving orgasm.
Can eliminate pain experienced during sex and athletic activities.
Can be combined with a labiaplasty to ensure an aesthetically proportional appearance.
Recovery
Recovering from a clitorial hood reduction can take up to six weeks, or slightly longer if combined with a labiaplasty. Prescription and over-the-counter pain medications can be taken to help ease discomfort during the first few weeks. Icing the area several times a day using a thin barrier to prevent the ice from directly coming into contact with the skin will help with pain and swelling. Keeping your bottom elevated as much as possible for the first 72 hours can help mitigate swelling.
Dr. Angelina will provide you with a list of aftercare instructions that are specific to your surgery but may include the following:
- Utilize a peri bottle with warm water to help keep the area clean after using the toilet and carefully pat dry; avoid using a wiping motion;
- Apply antibiotic ointment as directed by the surgeon;
- Refrain from bathing or swimming for six weeks;
- No sexual intercourse for six weeks;
- Avoid the use of tampons for at least six weeks;
- Refrain from shaving this area until it is well healed;
- Wear loose-fitting garments for maximum comfort while recovering.
Results
After a clitoral hood reduction, many women feel more comfortable with their bodies. If there was extra skin or scar tissue from childbirth or just natural anatomy, it can sometimes cause discomfort from rubbing or irritation, or create a bulky feeling under certain clothing. Removing the extra tissue and shaping the area to be more even and proportionate can help reduce physical discomfort and make activities like biking, running, or sex more enjoyable. Many women also experience enhanced sensitivity during intimacy since there is less skin covering the clitoris, which can make arousal easier and more enjoyable.

FAQs About Clitoral Hood Surgery
Who Should Perform My Clitoral Hood Reduction Surgery?
The female genitalia is a highly sensitive and complex network of nerves and requires special care and attention to detail. You should take care to choose a surgeon who possesses extensive training and expertise in performing this procedure, such as Dr. Angelina Postoev, a triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon.
Is Clitoral Hood Reduction Covered By Insurance Plans?
This procedure is considered cosmetic and therefore unlikely to be covered under any type of medical insurance plan. IBI Plastic Surgery & Med Spa is not part of an insurance network, and cosmetic surgery procedures are all self-pay. To assist our patients with their aesthetic transformations, we offer affordable payment options, which one of our team members will be happy to discuss with you during your consultation.
Can a clitoral hood reduction help correct structural damage?
Yes, excess skin or scar tissue that resulted from giving birth located around the opening to the vagina can cause irritation or embarrassment when wearing certain clothing or can even cause pain during sexual intercourse or participating in certain athletic activities. Reducing this extra tissue and contouring this area to be more symmetrical and proportionate can help ease discomfort and maximize sensitivity during sex while eliminating friction-induced irritation and pain.
