What is a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon is one of many medical weight loss procedures that have been proven to help obese patients lose weight.

An intragastric weight loss balloon is a procedure that involves placing a silicone balloon inside the patient’s stomach. It is filled with saline and left in place for 6 months. This inflated device fills a part of the stomach and makes the patient feel full without them having to eat as much; therefore, they consume fewer calories during mealtime.

This stomach balloon is used as a temporary tool but is a very effective method to defeat obesity. This method allows the patient to achieve their goal weight easier and faster, and it encourages them to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Bariatric balloons are installed for a period of 3 to 6 months, depending on the type of product selected. The balloon is installed endoscopically, without surgical intervention. We are proud to offer the Orbera intragastric balloon to help our patients achieve their weight loss goals.

If previous dieting and exercise have not delivered successful weight loss, an intragastric balloon may help deliver the desired result. When used as intended, together with a supervised weight loss program, gastric balloons can help patients achieve their ideal weight in a few months.

What Are the Secondary Benefits of Gastric Balloon?

Data from many studies has indicated that losing weight using a gastric balloon has secondary benefits beyond weight loss. Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other medical conditions can improve or go into remission as a result of using a gastric balloon to lose weight.

A gastric balloon offers the following benefits:

  • It is an excellent and long-term weight loss method;
  • The placement procedure is painless;
  • The procedure requires no incisions;
  • It is an outpatient procedure.

How Does a Gastric Balloon Work?

SurgiCare Arts & Aesthetics offers the Orbera Balloon.

The Orbera intragastric balloon involves a single balloon that remains in place for six months, combined with ongoing coaching for up to one year.

The Orbera program begins with the placement of the soft silicone device in the stomach. Then, it is filled with saline to resemble the size of a grapefruit or until it takes up about ⅔ of the stomach’s available space. The procedure usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, and patients can go home on the same day.

What Should I Expect from My Gastric Balloon Procedure?

After the procedure, the patient will always feel full because the stomach is partially filled with the balloon; they will eat less and begin to lose weight.

Immediately after the installation procedure, patients will need to allow their stomachs an adjustment period to become accustomed to the device and must follow a special diet. During the first few days, the diet will consist only of liquids, and then gradually, they can begin to eat purees, semi-solids, and then solid foods. Their doctor will provide them with specific instructions for their unique circumstances.

This procedure is meant to be used together with lifestyle changes that include improved eating habits and daily exercise. In the first few days after the procedure, many patients experience discomfort, but typically within a week, their stomach gets used to the balloon. The doctor can provide some medication if needed to help manage this discomfort. After about a week, most patients have reported that they are only aware the balloon is there because they only eat a small amount and are quickly satisfied.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Lifestyle changes are key to keeping the weight off after a gastric balloon. If the patient continues to practice what they learned during their program, including eating a healthy, balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise, they can maintain a healthy weight for the rest of their life!

Part of the Orbera weight loss program is a comprehensive level of support that helps guide the patient toward making permanent lifestyle changes that will promote their health and wellbeing and promote weight loss.
